Trevor's Northern Adventure
Trevor's Northern Adventure
"It's so cool that Mom and Dad let us take a hike all by ourselves," remarked Trevor.
"I know," replied Eryn. "I couldn't even believe it!"
"We
are
just going down to the lake," Tayler pointed out. "Besides, I am twelve now
and
going into middle
school."
"So, I'm eight," Trevor retorted. "What does that matter?"
"I'm just saying that I'm old enough to be responsible. Mom and Dad would never let you and Eryn take a
hike by yourselves," Tayler explained.
"They would too!" Trevor argued.
"No, they wouldn't!" returned Tayler.
"Yes, they would!"
"No, they wouldn't!"
"Hey guys, don't argue," said Eryn. "Isn't this just the most perfect day ever? Let's just enjoy the hike."
Trevor and Tayler looked at each other. "Truce!" they both said at the same time.
It really had been a perfect day and a perfect trip. Trevor's family had been camping for two weeks in the
upper peninsula of Michigan. Their campsite was on the coast of Lake Michigan about a mile from the beach.
The weather had been beautiful the whole trip- warm and sunny during the day with cool lake breezes overnight.
Besides hiking and swimming, they had also taken several day trips to Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls, and
Pictured Rocks. Today was the last day of their trip. Early tomorrow morning they would be heading home, so
Trevor and his sisters had begged to take one last hike to the lake...

"Ok, we'd better start back for help. It's already starting to rain," said Trevor.
"Are you sure we shouldn't just wait here with Tayler?" inquired Eryn.
"No," answered Trevor. "Tayler's ankle is already swelling up. If it is broke, she might need to see a doctor."
Another crack of thunder rumbled. This time much closer. "Maybe we shouldn't leave Tayler alone," Eryn said
nervously. "I could stay with her."
"No," said Tayler firmly. "You two need to stick together. I'll be alright."
"I'll take care of you," Trevor reassured Eryn, putting his arm around her shoulder. "Besides, we'll probably meet
Mom and Dad on the way."
"Ok," said Eryn. "I guess we'd better get going then."
"Be careful," called Tayler. "And just follow the signs to get back to camp."
As Trevor and Eryn started back on the trail it was raining softly. At first their way was easy and the signs easy to
spot. An occasional crack of thunder startled them, but they were sure they'd see their parents any minute. However,
as they reached the middle of the woods the weather took a turn for the worst as the thunderstorm descended upon
them in full fury. Thunder exploded over their heads; lighting flashed all around them. The rain came in blinding sheets.
It was now impossible to see more than a foot in front on their faces.
"I'm scared!" Eryn shouted above the wind.
"We have to keep going!" Trevor shouted back. "Hold on to me!"
Together they fought their way against the wind, desperately trying to get back to camp safely.
